The Agatha Christie Festival on the English Riviera

The Middle of September sees this years annual Agatha Christie Festival on the English Riviera. The Festival is a celebration of the “world renowned super sleuth writer” Agatha Christie and features lots of fun and events that have a flavour of Agatha’s world crime writing.
Agatha Christie is synonymous with not only the world of crime writing but also the towns of Brixham, Paignton and Torquay, as she was not only a resident of Torquay, but she was born in the town and grew up and spent a lot of her childhood in the Torbay area. But it was when she married for the second time, to an archaeologist called Max Mallowan in 1930, that Agatha and her second husband decided a few years later to return to the Torbay area and buy a local property called “Greenway”.
Now the Greenway house and estate is in the careful hands of the National Trust, as it was acquired by the trust in 1999, since then it has been restored and lovingly cared for by the Trust and its workforce in the area. It is open on a daily basis during the season for visitors to experience the home of one of the world’s most famous fiction crime writers, plus get a feel for the area and surroundings where Agatha drew on to create some of her finest work.
The annual Festival on the English Riviera will take place from the 11th to the 18th September, with visitors and the loyal fans interested in the world of Agatha will be able to immerse themselves in many places around the town of Torquay and the local area that have been used in Agatha’s stories or places that she sought inspiration from.
The Festival is always a huge success and always draws a large number of people and amateur sleuths to South Devon from all over the world, I’m sure this year’s event will be no exception. The programme of events during the week-long Agatha-fest includes; The Annual Agatha Fête, Vintage Tour Bus Trips to Greenway House, Dartmouth Ferry to Greenway House and Garden, Agatha Christie’s “Verdict”, with the AC Theatre Company at Princess Theatre in Torquay, a Murder Mystery Dining Train, “In Character” lunch at Burgh Island Hotel, Agatha Christie Mile Evening Vintage Bus Tour with Supper, A Birthday Celebration for the Queen of Crime and the AC Festival Finale Candlelit Dinner with Classical Trio, to name just a selection of the events running throughout the festivals’ duration.
So if you enjoy South Devon and you are a fan of crime fiction, this festival is surely a must for anyone interested in the Queen of crime, her stories and where she was inspired her in her life and her books.
